SG-3100 backup file didn't work
-
OK, I had a power outage a couple of days ago. The system took a bit to get recovered.. Yesterday, I lost my internet. I did a factory reset, did a restore and nada.. same state. I did a selective restore and got the whole system backup. It did still had some gremlins.. Did a complete OS install and reconfigure (some things were installed from the backup (saved some time).
What causes the corruption?
Why did the recovery file fail?
Any other way to prevent this or at least keep it to a minimum? Also, what packages besides pfBlockerNG-devel do you suggest??
VPN is something I may be interested in, but not right away..TNX Will

Check for yourself : you use some kind of desktop PC : rip out the power cable. Or remove the battery from your laptop while it runs from battery.
You have a great chance that Windows, or any other OS, will complain severely during restart. There is even a chance that you just lost everything because the partiton == the bits on the disk get fckf up.
That's why, if a device has a critical role, uses an UPS. No UPS mean : you should reserve time to repair (reinstall) things from backups .... You have the config backup ?
Easy rule : every device with a complex file system should be protected. If not possible, look at alternatives, smaller devices where the OS is in ROM, and not much RAM. You will loose some functionality, though. Also : look at this Netgate's video : How to Run a pfSense Software File System Check

@gertjan The backup file didn't work (I had a couple).. I now have a fresh one in two locations (NAS and PC). A new UPS (to be purchased) and standby generator (due here on May 11th) are on my list of things to do.. I guess I will always request a new OS image when they issue one. I didn't have a copy of the latest version (only the config).
