I've searched the forum for a solution to this and have yet to find it. I'm fairly new to pfsense and have setup a few networks with the software running on dedicated machines.

I have one network that has a QNAP nas and for whatever reason I cannot get any of the updates to download. It's showing that it has updates but when it comes to downloading them it's a no-go. It's probably a simple setting I need to change in pfsense. I didn't have this issue when I was using just a linksys router.

Most of the solutions Google has suggested are dealing with problems installing pfsense on a qnap. That's not the case here, I have a dedicated machine that's running pfsense.

Is there a setting I need to change in order to make this work?

Thanks in advance for any help.

@mlecule There is no 'Allow QNAP to update' checkbox. What is the exact error the QNAP is giving you? Check to see if it has detailed logs somewhere. You haven't supplied any details about your network so it's anyone's guess what's wrong.

There are some Malware out there, that blocks the Update process of QTS itself.

If your QNAP was reachable from wan, it is possible infected.

I run some QNAP NAS Systems behind my Sense and all can check for System and App Updates. But no QNAP is WAN Reachable, i use VPN for this.

@kom Ok so here's the network setup:
pfsense routing all traffic going into a netgear prosafe managed switch
two wireless routers set up as access points
            10 computers
            3 printers
            2 unmanaged switches
            QNAP nas
            Netgear nas

I'm using opendns for dns filtering of websites etc.

I checked the logs in the qnap and here's what I see so far as errors:

Error 2021-04-30 00:00:13 System 127.0.0.1 Hybrid Backup Sync Job Status [Hybrid Backup Sync] Failed to complete Sync job: "A-Sync". Failed to connect to cloud storage service after multiple attempts. Check network settings.

Warning 2021-05-02 03:14:40 admin 127.0.0.1 Storage & Snapshots Disk [Storage & Snapshots] Failed to upload disk analysis data. Disk: Host: Disk 8. The network quality is poor. The system will retry uploading the data once per day. After 7 failed attempts the data will be automatically deleted.

I see other warnings and errors but they are duplicates of these two.

The only change that has been made to the network is the addition of pfsense. I hope this helps.

@mlecule Are you using any packages such as pfBlocker or Squid? Is this QNAP on the your LAN or some other network? Are your LAN rules set to defaults or did you add/edit any? All clients on LAN should have access anywhere. Any additional networks must have rules defined before any traffic will pass.

Here's an update to my issue:

Disabled pfblocker and downloaded the firmware to install it manually. QNAP wanted to restart so I restarted. When QNAP came back up a message popped up to install the update from online. Problem seems to be fixed now. I'm going to try and enable pfblocker and see if it creates the problem again.

@mlecule Any time you have weird connectivity issues like that, get all the middlemen out of the way: pfB, Snort, Suricata, Squid.
