      Is it possible  to set the speed and duplex settings through the web interface.

        No. This is not something which is used often.
        Search the forum: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?action=search
        There are several howtos, how to modify the config.xml to force a mode.

        (There are a number of threads that explain why this is not directly in the gui)

          I know how to do so, i just asked myself the reason why it can not be done through the gui, and if it was do able to get it in the GUI?

          Found that it is in 2.0.
