      Hi.

I'm planning to install pfSense CE on compatible hardware in a few days time. I'm wondering if I'll be able to upgrade directly from pfSense CE to pfSense Plus, when it becomes available for custom built hardware? Ideally I hope it's possible to migrate without a full reinstallation.

Are there any things I should take into consideration for this future migration? As an example my hardware doesn't have a CPU with the AES-NI instruction set. Will this be a road block to a seamless transition?

Thank you for your time I appreciate it.

See FAQ 11 at the end of the blog post announcing Plus.

AES-NI was planned as a requirement for 2.5 but they removed that requirement a couple of years ago (look for that in the blog archive).

Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. If yours is older, select it in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, let it finish; do not reboot early. Allow 10-15 minutes, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@steveits Thank you for that link. I did see before that pfsense CE had dropped the AES-NI requirement.

I know that pfSense Plus will be available on 3rd party hardware. I'm curious if a direct upgrade from pfSense CE to pfSense Plus is possible or if a reinstallation is the only option I have.

Yes, it should be possible to upgrade directly without re-installing once the pieces are all in place.
