I am a homelab / home office person.
How loud is the XG-1541 in daily operation. I will be in the same room as the XG-1541 in my home office and probably three metres (10 feet) from it. It won't be in a cabinet, but of all places I've recycled an old TV cabinet that does the job nicely.
I don't want to be hearing screaming fans all day.
I need the CPU horsepower of this model. I have considered building a small mini-itx computer that would be whisper quiet, but with pfsense+ and pfsense CE, I don't want to be stuck on pfsense CE if I went with the mini-itx computer (which is less than half the cost of the XG-1541 and a way better CPU).
That said, there is value in having an all in one appliance for support. Noise is my number one issue (and cost).
If I could have the mini-itx with pfsense+, then my world would be good, but there is no information available yet on how I would qualify for a free pfsense+ homelab licence, nor whether that would exclude certain features that I might get on the XG-1541.
So if if the XG-1541 is noisy, then I'd have to rule it out.
If people are wondering why XG-1541. I want the best CPU I can get. I have gigabit internet, OPENVPN requirements where I need maximum throughput, IDS/IPS requirements, and I don't want to the firewall to break a sweat. I want it to perform in all its glory without slowdown.
The XG-1541 is a rack mount appliance intended to be in a rack with a bunch of other devices all with fans. It is not optimised for noise levels.
These things are subjective but I would expect it to seem 'loud' compared to a similar desktop appliance at that distance.
