Hi all. I need some help to get a bt open reach modem to work with my pfsense using vodafone uk FTTC.

The modem is connected to the wan port. I have created a new vlan with id 101 which vodafone gave me.

I then added the ppoe settings into the wan interface.

      I have also rebooted pfsense.

On the dashboard under wan it shows my ext fixed ip.

But i cant ping from pfsense 8.8.8.8 and pc has no internet.

I cant think what else i'm missing. It all works fine when i have vodafones modem router in place and pfsense gets a dhcp address from it.

The VLAN is usually applied in the modem, no need to configure it in pfSense.
I assume you have the HG612 or ECI equivalent modem?

However if must be working to some extent if you are receiving an IP from the remote side.
You said it's a fixed IP but the server end is still passing it via PPPoE?

          Hi, thanks for the reply.

          Yes its a HG612 B
I didn't think there was a ui for those modems yo configure them. Plug and go.

Yeah, you don't need to configure it, it's already setup for VLAN 101 by default.
Though technically there is a web interface and you can just unlock it. It's not hard whatever ebay sellers might imply. 😉
You can see the line stats etc if you do that.

So remove the VLAN from pfSense and just connect to it untagged with PPPoE.

I had 2 attempts at this as I have to schedule downtime in my house!! LOL

1st go was with no vlan. Again dashboard saw my ext ip. But no internet. 2nd i added the vlan 101 to wan port.

I dont know those modems to well. Can i plug a laptop into port 1 and test it working before it gets to pfsense? If so what would be the ip config for the laptop adapter?

By default the modem will only do PPPoE and only on one port. The other port should be covered by a label.
So if you connect a laptop to it directly you will need to setup a PPPoE connection on the laptop. That can be done to test.

Check the PPP logs in pfSense. When it connects correctly you should see the remote server pass you an IP, a gateway and DNS servers to use.

Some UK providers do not use the typical PPPoA connection. You have a link to the setup docs from Vodaphone for this?

@godhead83 pfSense WAN interface needs to be configured as PPPoE VLAN ID 101 is default and assigned by the Modem. BT uses VLAN101 by default. When you configure the WAN interface do you see a IP Address ? Contact Vodaphone and ask them for a Username and Password if you haven't already.
