Setting up Pfsense

Hello,

I need some help.

I’m using a dell optiplex 790 for my pfsense box. I gave it a 4 port pci network card that does work with pfsense (I watched a few videos showing the card I got works). The set up is modem > Dell (motherboard network jack). Pci network card. Port one to switch, port two to switch (friend who was helping me said to do this), port 4 to desktop pc. Port 3 is empty.
Pfsense doesn’t connect most of the time to the desktop. When it does connect it uses port 4 on the pci card
Once connected I can’t get Comcast to connect to the internet.
Any help you can give would be great.

If you want all the devices on the same network (LAN), the LAN port on the pfSense should go into a switch, and all devices on LAN connect through that switch.

Connecting multiple ports will result in multiple networks (LAN, OPT1, OPT2, etc.) and you'll have to set up firewall rules to allow traffic between them. (except the default LAN-to-any rule)

@steveits got ya so go modem> Pfsense> switch then send everything from that switch?

Correct. Then all devices are on the same network.

Having two NICs (and hence subnets/networks) connected to the same switch might function if you're careful, but for instance if DHCP is configured on both networks then which would any given device use?
