Earlier this year I replaced my Netgear with the Netgate 1100. I noticed at the time it took forever for the Netgate to see the Internet. I rebooted the modem and the firewall several times, then finally got Internet.

I tried swapping my Netgear in today to play around with it, and found I couldn't get the Internet from the TC4350, so I put back my 1100. It took 4 hours before I could get Internet again! If I plugged my laptop directly to the modem, I was able to get to the Internet just fine. But the Netgate couldn't pass the Internet through. The only thing I did not try was plugging in my computer directly to the LAN port of the 1100 (I should have, didn't think to try).

On the dashboard, I would see that I'd have a DNS server, and the WAN_DHCP would show online, but still no Internet to my desktop or wireless AP. I do have a number of things connected to the Netgate including 2 wireless AP, a NAS, home automation computer, and a surveillance system. This means I need a couple of simple switches.

Now everything is up and I'm happy again. But, why did it take 4 hours to get Internet back up again?
