I'm currently running 2.3.2-RELEASE-p5 on an old desktop computer that I built in 2003. It runs fine but I want to purchase something with a smaller footprint. I've decided to go with a protectli box and install the latest version of Pfsense.

Is it best to do a install and configure from scratch or attempt to run a back up and then restore?

I currently have 5+ vlans, squid and pfblockerng running so there are numerous amounts of configurations. It might take a good week or more to rebuild it all from scratch.

You should be able to restore a config file from an older version onto a newer version. There are several upgrade notes.

Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to reboot, or more depending on packages, and device or disk speed.
