    New SG-1100 will not upgrade from 2.4.4_3

      Our company purchased this unit from Netgate and kept it in our stock.
      We utilized/installed the product last week.
      It came with 2.4.4_3 on it.
      When I click on Confirm Update, it hangs at:
      "Please wait while the update system initializes"
      and never does anything.
      Nothing appearing in the logs.

      Being that the unit sat in our stock for over a year
      we have no support for it.

      Any advice on what we can do would be appreciated.

      We do not have any paid support options for this hardware
      so we are unable to go to Netgate to resolve this issue.

        @kb8doa Why not do a fresh install of the latest version of pfSense+? No support contract is required to request a copy of the firmware.

          Because I am a major advocate of PFsense / Netgate appliances and our office is not.
          In order to do a fresh install - I have to get a technician involved/dispatched to go onsite and do this.
          The office knows that I can normally remotely upgrade these products - and it will be a major "red flag" for our management to focus on if I have to resort to sending our techs out.

            Going from 2.4.x to 2.5.2 or "21.05 pfSense Plus" in your case, should be considered as a major operation.
            True, if the setup isn't fancy, a remote update could work out.
            But not having access to the console, because you're remote is/could be a major handicap.

            Also :

            That means some 'console time' for sure.
            This could be a remote SSH access, or, hook up the console on a PC nearby using the USB/serial cable, and RDP into this PC, and then use putyy remotly on that PC to 'console' into the 1100.
            Still, when the system is raedy for the upgrade, do it on site.

              Same just happen to me on a brand new unit SG2100 trying to upgrade it. Very new to PFSense so console mode definitely has me stuck. Support just told me to send an email, let see how long they take. Sucks - their own update is bricking the units:

                Check the file system.

                Before doing so, see the movie first.
                The file system can get bad (and becomes read only to protect itself) after a brutal power down.
                The console and GUI have a menu option to shut down the power.
                Like Apple - and Micosoft Windows PCs : don't rip out the power, as bad thing can happen.

                Btw : take it from me (just a pfSese user like you) : console access is mandatory.
                With some good news : if you have console access, yo won't need it very often.

                    What to do with the file you received, how to burn it to a USB stick, what tools to use to make a bootable USB drive etc, yo can find it all in the manual.

                    Btw : learning how to install 'clean' from USB is important.
                    The next time, if it happens again** you already did it ones, so you know what to do.

                    Now, save regularly the pfSense config file, and you are prepared for 'any' event.
                    And again : when you're prepared for something, it won't happen ^^

                    ** normally not, as pfSense runs best behind an UPS.

                      yeah, Brother is a Dev Op i think the name he gave me lol. Not that high up myself but he brags about pfsense and his machine. I started with a 2100 for a small office and I need a second office up. Did not had this issues with my first one but this one.. i see is going to make me learn. An eye opener for sure, like you said -> Definetly will be ready for any future problems. Thank for reply
