The status dashboard always shows the temperature as 140f or above.

Do I need to add a fan or is this acceptable?

No, this is the Core Temp of the CPU and the ARM CPU can run mutch hotter then this.

Have a look into the CPU Datasheet, -40 to 125°C, don't worry about your 65°C CPU temperature.

I agree with @nocling but keep in mind that devices using passive cooling depend greatly on air circulation.
You can see a big difference if you set up a small fan to blow air around. I do this and have the bonus of office isn't as stuffy anymore :)

That is a 'normal' reading for the 3100 though. I have 3 running here now showing 61, 62 and 65°C. The slightly hotter one is in a different room.

I got this 2x USB fan kit on ebay to hook up and run on my SG-2220, one below and one above. Below blows up, onto the metal box, the one above blows up, off of the metal box. Works great, and it's got little rubber buffer feet, so the units stand off the pfsense box ever so slightly, and they're totally quiet.

Brought the temp down to around 76 F. I'm in the US, so my pfsense box doesn't talk Celsius... :)
