Strange ISP Switch behavior.
-
Hi,
I have a cable internet. I installed pfsense on an old pc and it has 1 x Intel I219V Gigabit LAN controller (OnBoard ,WAN interface) and 1 x Intel I210-T Gigabit controller on a pci-e slot (LAN interface) . When i connect the cable from ISP to the Intel I219V onboard nic (WAN) some strange thing happens. The Cisco switch which is palced by ISP in the building shuts off the port I am connected and no signal transmitted over the cable. When the cable is plugged into another port on the same switch transmission starts. This happened several times and the results are the same. What can be the reason can anyone help me on this?
Than you. -
One possibility is port security. The port can be configured to allow only 1 MAC address or some low number.

@jknott Thank you for your answer Jknott,
What do you mean by low number? -

@jknott Thank you for your answer Jknott,
What do you mean by low number?and "When the cable is plugged into another port on the same switch transmission starts" somehow indicates that no port security configured on switch? I mean when the port plugged on the ISP modem.
Thank you.

The number of allowed MAC addresses. Normally a switch will accept any MAC. The switches can be configured to allow 1, 2, etc.

No, it means that there aren't other MACs registered on that port.
However, this is only one possibility. I'm not saying it's definitely the issue.

Does it link if you connect it to the LAN port?
Try spoofing the MAC address on the WAN.
