Proper 3100 replacement?
-
I see that the 3100 is EOS. How can the 2100 be a proper replacement when it doesn’t route at over a Gb?
Are there plans for a direct 3100 revision?

@prtonguy77 Based on what they told us Partners, it sounded like a replacement mid-range router wasn't ready yet but they were unable to get parts for the 3100. So they have the 2100 or 6100 for now.

OK- thank you for the information. I'll have to wait awhile.

@steveits I also have a trusty SG-3100, and am planning on upgrading to the Netgate 6100, but have concerns about how much of the configuration can be retained when "restoring" it to the new 6100 from the SG-3100 using the XML backup file.
I am guessing that I should first upgrade the SG-3100 from 2.4.5-RELEASE-p1 (arm) to pfSense Plus 21.05.1
Then I should upgrade the packages on the SG-3100 to the latest versions:
aws-wizard
freeradius3
ipsec-profile-wizard
openvpn-client-exportThen I should make sure that the same packages that already exist on the SG-3100 are installed using the package manager on the 6100.
I wonder whether the freeradius3 certificates from the SG-3100 can be used on the 6100, and whether the freeradius clients can be imported by a "restore" to the 6100, or will I have to start over by working on each teacher's PC or Mac?
I also wonder whether the firewall rules can be imported from the SG-3100?
Is there a place where I can to find the answers to these questions before I buy the 6100?

@gregbinsd Restoring a config can happen going forward just not backward so if the new router is the same or newer restores should work. BTW 21.05.2 is current.
If you restore a config file to a blank/new router it will try to install "missing" packages. That works if the router has an Internet connection. Otherwise yes you can install them first, that shouldn't hurt either.
I don't have experience with freeradius but I would be shocked if the info wasn't stored in the config (.xml) file and thus should restore fine to the new unit. Otherwise how would the package expect a backup/restore to function on the same router. Firewall rules and anything else will restore as well. I've never had anything be missing.

@steveits Steve, I appreciate you responding to my questions. After reading your post, I feel confident that it will be possible to upgrade to the 6100 without a huge hassle.
When the time comes to perform the upgrades and restore the XML configs, I'll report back to the forum. -
Yeah, you should be able to restore a 2.4.5 config from a 3100 directly into a 6100. It doesn't hurt to upgrade the 3100 to 21.05.2 first and backup the config from there though.
The only hurdle you're likely to face there is if you have separated any of the switch ports (LAN1-4) on the 3100 using VLANs. Since there is no switch on the 6100 all the ports are discrete NICs and no VLANs are required. However I would still expect it to be simply a matter of re-assigning the interfaces in the webgui before rebooting into the new config.
