qVoIP activity on interface (LAN) with no VoIP traffic
-
Not sure if what I describe below is a problem or not, but it doesn't seem correct to me. Don't know if I need to edit my floating rules or make any other config changes. Any help is appreciated.
I am running pfsense 21.05.2 on a Negate SG-2100. There is a single WAN and the default LAN and Voice VLAN (for the VoIP phones - local phones with remote SIP server). LAN and Voice connected to downstream managed switch via separate physical ports on SG-2100 (i.e. not trunked). IP phones are downstream from managed switch.
I ran the traffic shaper wizard (multi LAN/WAN) using PRIQ, since bandwidth is not an issue for me and just looking to prioritize the VoIP traffic. For the VoIP settings I used the IP of the upstream SIP server. Also set MSRDP traffic to higher priority. I left the floating rules that were created as is.
Queues created as follows:
And the floating rules (plus my pfblocker rules):
The issue that I am wondering about is what I see when I look at Status--> queues. There is traffic (the exact same traffic based on PPS and bandwidth) on the VoIP queue for both LAN and Voice (as well as the expected traffic on WAN).
I haven't noted any issues in terms of VoIP performance, although folks aren't always quick to report issues to me. But this doesn't seem right to me and not sure if it is a problem I need to be concerned about. From looking at the states and from packet captures I've done for other issues I know there is no traffic between the SIP server and the LAN in either direction - only the devices on the Voice VLAN are communicating with that upstream server.
So questions are:
Is this an issue to worry about? What problems could this cause or be an indicator of?
Do I need to edit the floating rules?
Should I edit the queues e.g. disable qVoIP on LAN?
Any other recommended actions?Any and all input/advice is greatly appreciated, as always. Let me know if any other info would help.
edit/update
I noted that there were no interfaces selected for the qVoIP floating rules (and assuming that means they are applied to all interfaces, maybe?), so I edited the rules to apply to WAN, Voice, WAN & Voice, in various combinations and saw no change - qVoIP activity on LAN interface exactly matches that on Voice. My next planned step is to either disable or delete qVoIP on the LAN interface. I assume that would stop the activity I am seeing on the LAN qVoIP, but my concern would be that I might be masking something else that is going on in the background due to a misconfigured floating rules/rules. I'm hoping to get some feedback before taking that next step. Thanks again for any help.
