I just tried replacing my network adapter, and a bit confused about the way to reconfigure pfsense. Is there a best method to not lose any existing config (VLANs, rules etc.) or is it the best just to download the backup xml and modify the interface names there ?

You can import the config and re-create the VLANs and re-assign them but it's often easier to just edit the config to the new interface names and then import it in this situation. Especially if you have a lot of VLANs. It is easy to make a mistake though manually editing the config so if you go that route be sure to have a known working backup and physical access to the firewall.

@stephenw10 OK, I also realized it is much easier to edit the XML. Thanks the config file is an XML.
