NetGate 7100 1U Ports 9 and10
-
hello,
Looking for some direction and help. I am trying to find a way to work the SFP ports on the 7100. I would like to have them used as uplink/downlink (i think this is the terminology) to connect a DAC to my switches.
All Vlans are through pfSense.
Under Swiches/Vlans I have the following:
1 -- 1
1 -- 4090 -- 1, 9t,10t
2 -- 4091 -- 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9t,10t
4 -- 20 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10t
5 -- 30 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10t
6 -- 50 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10t
7 -- 100 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10t
8 -- 200 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10t
9 -- 500 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10t
10 -- 250 -- 2t,3t,4t,5t,6t,7t,8t,9t,10tWhat I want to do is connect the port 9 (ixo) to our main switch. And that main switch is connected to another switch. I have a 3rd switch that I would like to connect to port 10 (ix1). Would all the Vlans pass through each other? I mean would everything communicate? The SFP ports on the switches do run at 10gig also.
Any help would be great as to how to configure these ports if this would not just work as I have currently.
I have the lastest updates for pfSense.
Thanks!

The SFP ports on the 7100 (
ix0
andix1
) are independent and not connected to the internal switch. Nothing in the switch settings would affect them. -
Yup that^.
Ports 9 and 10 are connected internally to ix2 and ix3 as part of the default lagg0.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I am a novice here...I don't want to sound stupid, but if I connect a DAC to the switch, does all the vlans pass on ix0? In other words, right now I have a cat6 connected to port 2 for one switch and a cat6 connected to port 4 for another, all vlans pass traffic between them correctly. Would that still happen here?

No. The SFP+ ports, ix0 and ix1, are separate interfaces they are not connected to the internal switch. VLANs configured on the switch and internally on lagg0 are not passed to them.

OK, I get that now...so for example I would have to configure all the vlans on ix0 and/or ix1 to pass the traffic?
Why then put the two SFP+ ports that can't be used? maybe I am just not knowing how to properly use them at this point.
-
They can be used, just not as part of the switch.
The XG-7100 is a firewall/router not a switch, it routes between the interfaces.
If you really need to you can define the VLANs on ix0/1 and bridge them to those on lagg0 but it's not recommended.

Yeah...I just saw this post...didn't see it in my search of the forum before:

hmmm, I see what you are saying they route between the interfaces. In our small network, we have those vlans listed above with end devices spread out on different switches. I have the Eth 2, and 4 used to ensure routing. Yeah I should have the switches connected but they are not top of the line, and with the costs and this being a nonprofit it is hard to spend that money and even to get the money. I was hoping to utilize the SFP+ ports like I did on the Ubiquity UDM Pro of which we replaced.
I like this unit Netgate, so much better, though...I am now recommending this to everyone.
