@jimp When I originally posted this, I hadn't noticed this related post: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/169555/restore-config-to-sg-2100-from-dissimilar-hw
I tried to delete my own post, but got a message that I did not have enough privileges.
I noticed that you moved my post to "General pfSense Questions". Cool. Thanks. Being a newb, I didn't know that this is where the question belonged.

The 1100 is different because all the interfaces are VLANs by default so you cannot just import the config to it and reassign the interfaces directly.
You can go the other way, export a config from an 1100 and import it into something else, because you can just reassign the interfaces from VLANs to physical NICs.Steve

@stephenw10 Thank you. Very interesting. After using the serial interface and PuTTY at setup to change the default LAN IP address to one that would work with my network (192.168.10.200), I swapped out my Protectli Vault (which has no vlans defined) with the 1100... and everything worked. (I'm not using any downstream vlan-aware routers or switches).
As an aside, I noticed that the 1100 uses about 14 percent CPU just idling. Strange.
I'm still at the baby step stage. I only just recently first heard of vlans.

That's not unusual if you have the dashboard up and widgets on it.
To get a real reading of idle usage use
top
at the command line and be sure not to have the dashboard up in a browser anywhere.Steve
