Intel nics vs chipset?

Of course it depends on exactly what you're trying to do.
Here's a good thread:
https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/list-of-nics-and-their-equivalent-oem-parts.20974/
I have an OEM version of the i340-T4 card and it works great and much less money. Like $30 on EBay used. -

@flowermoron
NIce card. I have a Dell i340. Again it depends on what you're doing ; how many vpns, how many users, OpenVPN or IPSEC, etc. -
The NIC really makes no difference to VPN throughput other than using CPU cycles that could be encrypting stuff. Probably not a measurable difference.

@stephenw10 i want to run pfsense in an unraid vm, i have a xeon cpu (can do AES-NI) and 32g ram ddr3.
ill give it 2 cores and 8g ram, and ill use that 4 port nic from ebay, is that enough to unlock pfsense full potential? even if the nic chipset came out in 2011
-
@flowermoron said in Intel nics vs chipset?:
is that enough to unlock pfsense full potential?
No
But that is because you have asked a silly question. Of course there is faster hardware pfsense would achieve higher throughput with. Please ask a more useful question. Such as I have a XXX Mb/s internet connection and want to run YYY Mb/s VPN using zz connections. Is processor AAA likely to achieve that? With that sort of question you can look a benchmarked systems and compare it to what you are looking at buying.

@patch its for my house, i have plenty of devices & access points, will it beat my main router netgear r8000? and by "it" i mean the nic card & the fact im running pfsense in vm.
my r8000 has dd-wrt & is dieing a slow death, thats why im looking for get pfsense..
my main worry is the chipset, its kinda old, on intel website it say 2011, i just wanted to know if THAT makes a diffrence, should i keep looking for newer? or im i totaly wrong & worried for nothing?

Patch, just because you have a little bit more knowledge than me doesnt give you the right to bully me.

- To get a meaningful answer you need to provide the data on which the answer depends.
- I suspected you were sure what information was actually required, which is why I asked specific question (Wan speed, VPN speed, and if you want a more accurate answer what other advanced filtering, or high speed VLan pass through filtering requirements do you have).
- With that data there are benchmarked systems you can compare your proposed system to.
- The age of the processor is not the most critical parameter.
Not providing critical information when asked and instead repeating an unanswerable question does limit the quality of answers you can get.

Ok i bought the nic from ebay, only 2 left and got scared it will get bought
ill test it when it arrive and give an update, wish me luck!
-
The age of the chipset isn't going to be an issue.
But to have any idea if it will do what you need it to we do need to know what you're planning to do with it. It's going to be at least as fast as an R8000 though.

@stephenw10 home usage mostly, netflix, gaming, cctv, downloading stuff... whatever my r8000 did before.
also want to put some stuff behind a vpn & leave others, i know pfsense can do that, i was worried about the chipset age limiting pfsense full potential.. AS A HOME ROUTER
anyways, i ordered the nic, ill report back & inform everyone of the results.

I imagine you'll have no problem. Your available WAN bandwidth is what matters here though. I don't see that shown here yet.

@stephenw10 105 Mbps
-
Ah, then no problem at all!
-
finally the nic arrived, the wrong one actually
got a 2 port nic instead of 4 BUT they were very cool about it, got refunded and said its ok to keep the nic!got it from here
-
@flowermoron Nice! If there's room, put them both in your box and have 6 ports for pfsense! :)
-
@akuma1x well i only have one nic shown in the pic
i put it in my system, its all good so far!i also want to remind everyone that its a used nic card i got from ebay FOR FREE!!!
got sent the wrong one and was refunded the full amount and told to keep it, so if you want a reliable and honest ebay seller you should definitely look them up! they already have high rating on ebay.im not doing advertising or anything, its just my limited experience dealing with them.
