Migrating h/w with 2.60
-
So, I bit the bullet and ordered some new kit that supports AES and more LAN ports.
I will setup a clean install, but is there a way to migrate the alias, rules, etc that will be common?
Or what is the suggest approach, i don't want to have to re-do everything. e.g. i have a large China alias to bypass the vpn, etc -
@gwaitsi You can just restore your config file from the downloaded backup.
-
@steveits no you can't.
If the interfaces are different, i.e. igb instead of em0 for example it breaks everything.
I went from a J1900 with em interfaces to a J1900 with igb interfaces and ended with a complete mess to get everything working again. New interfaces have to be created, the vlans have to be assigned, but don't think you can from memory.It is definitely not a simple restore, unless you are like for like.

@gwaitsi The restore should prompt you to select replacement interfaces during the restore. Alternatively if you've booted up the new router and know the interface names, you can edit the XML file before restoring.

If you've got a bunch of VLANs or other subinterfaces it can be easier to just edit the config manually and swap out the raw interface names.
There's a pretty good chance the new box will be igb as well though.

What you do is after the install, use the keyboard and video connection to directly access pfsense. Then configure the interfaces. It's option 1 in the menu. I did this last year, when I got a new computer for pfsense. See sig.

@jknott happy chappy, the new box has a console port. It was a pain the a.s to take the monitor and keyboard to the basement every time ;-)

@gwaitsi
I have a 4 port HDMI & USB KVM. However, in your case,it might be easier to bring the pfsense computer upstairs. Also, my Qotom has a serial port. If necessary I could use it. Running a serial cable isn't hard. In fact, you can use an Ethernet cable, with Yost connections. You just configure a DE-9 (It is not a "DB-9") connector for each end as needed.
