Newgate 3100 ssd compatibility
-
I am out of space. It runs very slow and give a growing list of “cannot allocate memory” errors. I create a lot of logs. Does anyone know if the WD 500GB Red SA500 SATA III M.2 Internal NAS SSD - M.2 2280 would work. It’s difficult to find a non nvme drive and the ones I find are TLC. I know it’s a nas drive but it can take tons of read/writes/erase before breaking down, (my opinion). Or if someone could recommend a drive that works. Thank you.

Theoretically any m.2 SATA drive should work. I'm not aware if any capacity limit but we don't test anything huge. We fitted 32GB drives and tested 64GB. I know people have fitted 256G drives without issues.

I am using the 8G version of a SG-3100, but I had never any issue with capacity.
Just to still curiosity: Which processes/tasks are consuming such an amount of space!? Only logs or anything else?Regards

@rwq891 My guess is, because you say "I create a lot of logs", is that you may be creating too many logs. I agree with @FSC830 what exactly are you logging?
It is possible that you can trim down your log files, and only look at important stuff, not EVERYTHING that you can make logs for. Does that make sense? For example, if you are logging everything on your LAN network, maybe only look at specific machines/computers. If you are logging everything coming into your WAN interface, maybe only look for specific countries, or IP address ranges.
Basically, what I'm getting at, if you are logging absolutely everything your pfsense machine is doing, maybe it's time to eliminate most of the "noise" and only capture and look at the important stuff. But, only you can answer that question - what's the important stuff?

Yeah, if you are logging that much you should consider exporting to a syslog server really.

@fsc830 I’m testing scripts. I run suricata, snort… not at once, then download them to test my python scripts. I know that that’s overkill but I need to fix the issues now. I can find a smaller drive later. Nvme is everywhere. Thanks for the help.

@stephenw10 I’m working on a parsing project. So I’ll be testing my code for a few weeks. Then things will go back to normal.

yes but not compatible with the 3100. m.2 mSATA only.

@rwq891 If you're still in the market for an SSD I can report the Kingston SA400M8/240G A400 SSD, 240GB, M.2 to be working in my SG-3100.
