      Hello!

In my home I have the problem, that opening Webpages takes long and sometimes I get a timeout.
After reload the page is loading

What info you need, to help?

      Thank you!

Accessing pfSense using it's IP or host name will bring you to the main dashboard page first.
This page shows info that isn't available locally, like possible updates for packages.
So pfSense contacts the Netgate package servers and pfSense update servers to gather information.

True, there were some issue in the past that could slow down this access, these were resolved.
Yet, you've decided to not upgrade pfSense. 2.4.4-p3 is old .....
You've changed the DNS Resolver default settings, to make it a forwarder. This means, if a host name isn't available in the local cache, it has consult some other resolver. This forwarder option is present for legacy reason, bit not needed any more these days.

You've shown the DNS resolver page, do you man this page is slow to access ? This page has only shows settings available locally, and should not be slow to show up.

Edit : and where are the logs ??

          Thank you.

So you maybe have a link how I need to setup, to access local computers in the network by their names and resolve the rest from a public DNS server?

I did not update, because he show me no new version:

8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 are many things, but not 'public servers' ;)

            The version :

            3cedb59f-0ab0-414b-860a-c388be9db016-image.png

as you can see, I have some extra info :

Version information updated at Mon Mar 28 9:12:31 CEST 2022

so I know, that the latest check succeeds a couple of minutes ago.

The dashboard tells you about latest Netgate development : see here :

            d289e552-3a04-4b01-a982-b2a151644df1-image.png

This forum, national TV channels, Youtube, redit ( I did not look at other media oulets ) will tell you if a new version is available.

What do you have here : System > Update > System Update and System > Update > System Update ?

            I've :

            026f6b3e-9805-47c0-95ac-0361eb98a2cc-image.png

It looks like your pfSense can't access the "outside", so it can't access Netgate's servers to determine if an update is present.
This explains also the slow access and/or page time out.

As you are suing a VM, I advise you to backup your config, and down + install a new 'ISO'. Us the backup up config to set up your new version directly.

use the default DNS settings, undo your changes.
You can ditch 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1, and disable forwarding mode.

Thank you .. yes, guess to install a new iso is the best.

Yes, I have a VM and can install pfSense new.

I try now to install a new ISO and check then again.

              Thank you!

Ok, installed 2.6.0 and restored from prev. Backup.

But I´m not sure how I have to setup the DNS.

                What I need:

                • connect local PCs with their names (DHCP and static names)
                • connect local PCs with public names (ex: portal.home.com => 192.168.0.200)

So just a simple DNS Forwarder is not possible, right?

Using the DNS resolver as a forwarder is possible. The option exists, so you can / could use it.

The default settings, using the resolver as a resolver, has a major advantage : it works out of the box ;)

                  Btw : do yourself a favour : Un-check (disable) this option :

I see you upgraded already but for future reference:
                    https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/troubleshooting/upgrades.html#upgrade-not-offered-library-errors

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

A delay opening pages like that can often be an IPv6 connectivity issue.
If the firewall has an IPv6 address and and handing v6 IPs to internal clients but does not actually pass v6 traffic then all clients try to use it and have to timeout before falling back to v4.
The firewall itself will also try to use v6 to check for updates if it has it and there was an issue with that over the last few days. That's now resolved.

                        Thanks to all!

I installed the latest version, use DNS Resolver and disable the "DHCP Registration".
                        IPv6 is disabled.

I will see if its now better.

                        Thank you!
