I am planning a small home network with 1 Gigabit (2 laptops, 2 smartphones max), for which I would like to use a dedicated hardware firewall with pfsense beside a router, a switch with VLANs and a wifi access point.

Could the following Intel N3350 Dual Core mini-ITX Motherboard be used for pfSense?

I thought about using this with 8 GB RAM and a small SSD drive.

      Thanks for your feedback!

So you have a 1G WAN or only 1G internally?

It will probably pass 1Gbps (assuming turbo works) but not much more. So if you wanted to run packages etc that will reduce the throughput.

@stephenw10 The internal network components support 1G. The modem from my ISP only provides 100 Mbit, which is ok. As a backup a 4g modem will also be used.

I might consider intrusion detection, proxy filtering and network statistics gathering / logging. Security would have a higher priority than network speed.

Do you see any problems with that motherboard?

At 100Mbps it will be fine. You might find it pushed when routing between VLANs though. Especially if that traffic hits any anything like IPS.

@telmap85 I haven't used this myself, just been considering it, and on paper at least it sure looks hard to beat for $200. Just thought it may be of interest to you:

@thenarc Thanks for the follow up. Hardware supply is unfortunately limited in my region of the world.

@stephenw10 My switch is programmable and could handle the VLANs and would simply be used to create 2 different groups.

Right but unless it's a layer 3 switch traffic between different VLANs would still need to be routed/filtered by pfSense and that could be up to 1G.
