48 PRO switch with pfsense (how to do 10gig)
-
So I am trying to figure out the best way to setup to take advantage of 10gig. I have the 48 pro switch, and also the pfsense netgate 7100. I was planning on running my Ethernet into the pfsense and then into the switch. The only problem is the pfsense only works with sfp+ for 10gig. Anyone have any ideas since my connection from isp is Ethernet.
also the rj45 spf adapters I guess won’t work

You can get copper Ethernet SFP modules. Why wouldn't those modules work? The whole point of SFP modules is you can provide the interface you need, whether fibre or copper and the right fibre modes and wavelength.

@murk00 SFP modules will work in SFP+ slots, I don’t think the RJ45 10G modules are supported in the 7100 SFP+ slots.
Does the 10G switch port have a SFP+ slot, if it does use a DAC cable, it will also be a cheaper solution.
Same goes for your ISP connection.

You can't use SFP+ copper RJ45 modules in the 6100 for the same reason as the 7100. The C3K SoC does not have lines from the onboard NICs to detect and read the data from them.

@stephenw10 my ISP does not offer SFP connection only RJ45. So it looking like this pfsense 7100 wont work with 2+gig ethernet connection unfortunately.

The link to your ISP device is 10Gbase-T? Not just the switch?

My planned solution for the coming of 2Gb...
I bought managed switch with 2.5Gb and SFP+ ports. I will run the ISP 2.5Gb connection into the switch and out a 10Gb port to my 7100. The switch will do the conversion since the SFP+ ports on the 7100 do not support copper.Today I run the ISP 1Gb into my managed switch and out a 10Gb port to the 7100. So I know the method will work. It also has the side effect that I can easily move my PC to the ISP LAN if I need to troubleshoot something.
The only other option I have found is to find one of the 2.5Gb cards that will work with pfSense and add it to the slot in the 7100. There is a thread on this subject.

@andyrh Do you know what addon card that is that will do 2.5gig?
-
An i225 based NIC should work. This one for example.
I tested that in a 7100 and it works fine.
Also the lighting looks cool.

You can get separate media converters to convert between fibre and copper.

My ISP recently announced they'll soon be offering 8 Gb and then 10 Gb symmetrical connections

@jknott I think the Netgate 1537 does 10 gig RJ45 WAN & LAN. I can going to call there sales dept Monday to see if that would be a soultion.
