New install on MOGINSOK AES-NI VPN Router

Hey, I was looking into this router, was interested if you could provide your regular home speeds and what speeds you get through a openvpn vpn connection.

@khoomn Hi, my advice, don't buy it. It died a day later and wouldn't even restart again, so I sent it back (that was the second one). I ordered a different mini computer from China, but it won't be here till about 6/17/22 - 01/07/22 if I'm lucky.
Anyway, I have a 1.0 Gbps line from Suddenlink/Optimum and the VPN is really slow over PureVPN using any router (tried 3 different ones and different configurations.) The modem is a Nighthawk CM2000 2.5 Gbps and it's fast enough.
The laptop and ROG gaming desktop both reach 980Mbps using a Nighthawk X500 Router and the Nighthawk CM2000 Modem, but again vpn is slow <150 Mbps and less. My whole network is constructed with 2.5 Gbps Hardware (Trendnet 2.5 Gbps switches, Cat 5e cables).
That's why I wanted a better Router with less overhead slowing it down. -

Thanks Stephenw10 for the info about the PFsense license. After trying to reinstall PFsense 2.60 on the unit it died and would absolutely not restart. Tried everything the manufacturer said to do, but nothing worked. Must have been the second hardware bug I got from that company.
The new system, also a mini computer, is now running a fresh new PFsense (installed by me) and is doing great. no lags, no dropouts, high speeds (890 Mbs). Thanks again for pointing out my mistake about the license.RandyW

So, as promised, my update...
I got rid of the Moginsok appliance, that was the second one that died for no reason. It took a few days to get here, but I now have the:
Upgrade Firewall Micro Appliance, 4 Port i225 2.5G LAN Fanless Mini PC Celeron N5105,8GB 2666Mhz DDR4 128GB NVMe SSD Gigabit Ethernet AES-NI VPN Router Openwrt Barebone from Amazon ($345.33) and I updated the memory to 16 Gb.
This unit didn't die with a newly installed PFsense 2.60. It's fast and now I have +- 890 Mbs speed. I'm going to be testing PureVPN in a day or two as soon as I have the time. My network is all 2.5 GBASE-T hardware with CAT 6 cables so transfers to and from the NAS boxes (also 2.5 G) is really fast and fun to watch. Working at this level is worth the investment for me. -
These kind of threads always puzzle me a bit.
They usually unfold in a similar sequence of unfortunate events. Something like
"hey guys, anyone know where I can buy a cheap appliance that will do (10Gbit, 1Gig OpenVPN, handle 10 IPsec tunnels, whatever etc) for <$200?"
followed by some recommendations of this unknown thing or another from Ali Express, eBay, or god knows where
followed by "hey guys my box is [overheating, crashing, not able to update, not giving me the right speeds, etc]... "
followed by "I spent a few hours troubleshooting and reinstalling and things seem ok now, XYZ is broken, and my CPU temp always says -49.7C but besides that, I'm good!"
so you "saved" $100-200 vs buying an official, legit and supported device from Netgate (which in turn helps keep the project alive) and then proceeded to spend 3-10+? hours fiddling around with it, only to end up with a device that will likely have a short life, is violating the license, and probably without anyone to support you (including the community since nobody else is likely to have that same box with whatever issue you might run into...)
Am I missing the part where this makes any practical or economic sense??

Well you are missing a little ...
I'm a sever and network engineer (30 years) and I don't fiddle or fumble around as you put it. I try to buy quality hardware that works. Maybe some people have hundreds of dollars, but my military disability pension doesn't go far when it comes to buying expensive computers and extra hardware, so I do with what I have. But now here come the people out of the woodwork complaining about a 65 year old (or anybody for that matter) that doesn't buy the hardware he thinks is better. Well Good for you and your opinion, we're all different and I like it that way. And if you took the time to read all of my posts then you would have seen that the MOGINSOK died after only 2 days of service and the mini replacement (different brand) is running just fine. So, no fumbling, no guessing, no over-heating, just good hardware and good speed. Hope you have a Good day! ;-) -
@randyw No offense intended, and thank you for your service. If you're happy with the solution you ended up with, then I'm happy.
Not everyone has the same story though, and in general, I think many people underestimate the value of a properly engineered and tested system vs. something that is a one-off run from an unknown company (not saying you can't get lucky once in a while...)
All that said, even I do prefer when Netgate was OEMing the Lanner stuff (FW7535, SG-5100) Very high quality manufacturing. The Silicom stuff (4100, 6100) seems pretty good too but doesn't quite give you that "holy shit I could run this over with my car and it wouldn't even dent" kind of feeling.

Nothing does anymore, because no one takes pride in their work. When I was an apprentice in Germany (6 year Toolmaker degree) I was always looking at the work I did, including the language I learned, and was amazed at what I had accomplished. These days NOTHING is built to last, so might as well have fun with what we have and be happy... I'm alive, so I guess I did something right. :-)
By the way the little appliance PC is humming right along and now I'm setting up my VPN again which is what that Netgear router couldn't do.
