NETDATA doesn’t work in PFsense 2.6.0
-
@vitorgrohs Never compare pfSense to any other about what work in reference to a third party unapproved package, that's like Apples and Oranges. So, I am curious as to why you need that package? A quick lookup reveals all it does is a duplication of what's already provided: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NETDATA

This is almost certainly the result of a bug
No - not really. So you want to install some 3rd party app, with a load of dependence on other packages, that are not part of pfsense.. But somehow this is a bug with pfsense?
The instructions to install netdata on the netdata site for pfsense are dated, they are not for 2.6, most of those packages listed are not available in those versions for the version of freebsd that pfsense is using 12.3 stable.
As their instruction say, you would need to install the correct packages for the version your running.
"If any of the above commands return a Not Found error, you need to manually search for the latest package in the FreeBSD repository. Search for the package's name, such as py37-cffi, find the latest version number, and update the command accordingly."
Those instructions also list a old version of netdata 1.31.0_1, current version is 1.34.1
I really would think long and hard about installing such a 3rd with all of those dependencies, there is one thing to install freebsd package that has no other dependence..
What I would suggest if you really really want this - is get with the makers of said software for instructions for the current version of pfsense. But I would think long and hard about installing it and possible compromise pfsense.
The correct way to get something like that integrated into pfsense, would be to request it as a package, or to find someone with the skills to create the package to install it into pfsense via official channels. Like the other packages that you can install. At least then it will have some oversight by the pfsense devs to make sure it doesn't break something..

Hi everyone,
This is Marius, from Netdata.
I noticed the topic here and would like to see if I can help.
We don't currently support pfSense officially, but we are open to a discussion around that.
@johnpoz Are you the right person to start a discussion on this topic? Would Netgate be interested in collaborating with us?I look forward to your reply.
best regards,
Marius -
@marius-netdata No I wouldn't be the guy.. Just a mod here, You should prob start conversation with @stephenw10 - he for sure would know who specific in the org to start talking too.
-
Thank you, @johnpoz !
Hi @stephenw10 would you be open to a quick chat on this topic? If yes, when would it be a good time for you?
-
Hi @johnpoz,
Do you have Stephen's contact information, by any chance?
I'm wondering if you could reach out to him directly, because I'm not sure he's seen this thread.thanks a lot,
Marius -
@marius-netdata I will bring it up in chat with him.
-
@marius-netdata I chatted with Steve just a few minutes ago, he had missed this thread. He should be reaching out to you.
-
Yup, let me see if anyone is using it internally already.
What did you have in mind here?
Steve

Hi, Steve!
First of all, thanks for your willingness to help!
Netdata would like to see if there is any possibility of adding native packages for netdata in pfSense?
We'd like to know what would be required and how we can help to make that happen.
We are getting quite a few inquiries from pfSense users regarding this topic, and we believe that may be beneficial for both parties :)That being said, I look forward for a future collaboration!
best wishes,
-Marius -
Still looking at what we might be able to do here. In the mean time it looks like this was working in 2.6 and now is not because the various instructions are referencing the FreeBSD 12 Latest repo. That now contains a version of netdata which depends on Python 3.9 and pfSense 2.6/22.05 is running 3.8. If you use the pkgs from 12 Quarterly instead I expect that to work.

I made it work.
Use all repos from python 38.
im trying to paste the link with the repos but the anti-spam is blocking.

I've created a feature request on redmine for this:
https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/13809 -
Could this be made to serve any specific client on what he is seeing?
Just thinking of a shared pfsense environment where different clients are served in VLAN's.
Then feed that data into a website available for the specific client to login and see traffic/alerts realtime incl. an attack/traffic map.?
