One of my old devices has been upgrading for a long time. It has always had zfs so it uses old pool name - zroot. Once 22.05 is ready I'll try to upgrade it too. But I wonder if zfs boot environments will work in this case with another pool name as now it is pfSense. Or maybe it is renamed during upgrade? Please let me know if full reinstall is needed to have properly working zfs boot environments in this case.

You will need to re-install to get the BE compatible filesystem layout. Anything that was installed when we were still using zroot will be too old.

After the last round of BE changes it does actually work on zroot pools, or it had been for me. Still probably best to wipe and reload though if it's that old.

Mmm, the name itself should not be an issue but, yeah, I would definitely re-install.
