On the Notifications tab/Email I have following:

      • E-Mail server: smtp.gmail.com
      • SMTP Port of E-Mail server: 465
      • Secure SMTP Connection: Yes
      • Validate SSL/TLS: Yes
      • From e-mail address: pfsense@gmail.com (this email address is fictious)
      • Notification E-Mail address: xxx.yyy@gmail.com (my gmail-address)
      • Notification E-Mail auth username: xxx.yyy@gmail.com (my gmail account)
      • Notification E-Mail auth password: zzzzzz (my gmail account)
      • Notification E-Mail auth mechanism: LOGIN

Clicking on Test SMTP Settings I got this ...

Could not send the message to xxx.yyy@gmail.com -- Error: Failed to set sender: pfsense@gmail.com [SMTP: Invalid response code received from server (code: 530, response: 5.7.0 Authentication Required.

What is wrong in my configuration?

Since end of May/beginning of June Google switched to 2FA - maybe you should check that. Maybe you need for you pfsense a individual PWD that you can obtain from your Google-Account.

But Google will no longer accept this. See here (example):

You have to enable 2FA and setup an App Password to use outbound SMTP now.
