I used to be able to take a config and apply it via the console..

      ssh and viconfig

Delete the contents and then paste in a config, reboot and it all worked.

But since the 22.05 I can only restore via the webif, if I try and do the command line, the config is altered, interface names are not retained, but the vlans are created.

wan and lan are preserved, but [opt1 - opt8] are reset back to their WAN2, WAN3, etc names..

Learning the webif would correctly preserve the config took more time that I am ashamed to admit.. As I never had to do that before..

I am restoring to populate a new device.. not to restore a failed configuration..

I can provide diffs of what does not carry over correctly, if anyone is interested..

But if the answer is simply - just use the web interface; I'll take that.

      Thanks in advance.

What config are you importing? What version? From the same hardware?

When you import the config via the gui the config upgrade scripts are run against it.

If you need to import a config I'd recommend using the external config locator via USB (if you're local to it). https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/restore-during-install.html#restore-using-the-external-configuration-locator-ecl
