descriptions on devices
-
Hi,
When I go to the DHCP lease configuration, i find that many devices don't do a good job of reporting what they under the "hostname" field. For example, my Samsung Smartthings hub calls itself "hub-v2-MACADDRESS". Many don't report anything and just an IP address is listed.
I would like to be able to change the hostname field to a description. I'm aware you can do this if you set all the devices to static IP's, but this seems overkill.. . Currently, i maintain a spreadsheet of Mac Addresses to 'descriptive device names'
I was just wondering if there was any other way at all, to get a "table" that shows IP, Mac, and a description name I choose using vanilla dhcp... I don't think there is, and its ok if there's not. Just checking in with some experts. Thank you for considering my question and while i'm not a network guy, i'm capable enough i wouldn't be afraid to SSH in and run "show int status" type of command if there HAPPENED to be a CLI way to get it done, instead of a GUI way.

@jwwags92 This is done on the request level from the device -- the only want to manually set them is through DNS.
You can use the override function in DNS Resolver to do hosts but you will need to make sure the addresses are either very long lived or statically assigned.

@rcoleman-netgate Thank you. Is it fair to say that using DNS resolver to override would be like having a device that is still using DHCP, but i'm configuring a static DNS entry for the DHCP device in this example?

@jwwags92 DNS resolver would make it a universal setting to all items that use your pf to resolve... but you're still stuck in the spot of having to do it manually.
Configuring a static-map is still a need, and while it usually works it won't help you when you have a static address already that needs an FQDN.
