Upgrade 2.6.0 --> pfSense Plus: Unable to check for updates / pkg-static 'Bad Request'

I'm having a really hard day upgrading my CE 2.6.0 to pfSense Plus.
Tried it 3 hours ago, my WAN died after the move to 22.05 (see here). Looks like mpd was not correctly upgraded during the upgrade. Moved back to the 2.6.0 snapshot I made before the attempt.
Now I wanted to try it again. Same installation as before. It's correctly registered. But now it can't even get the pfSense Plus update information:
"Unable to check for updates"
In console I'm getting this:
