I currently have a Netgate SG3100 running pFsense 22.05. I am considering upgrading to a NetGate 6100 so I am wondering if I can simply restore a config from the 3100 to a new 6100 and have it basically be identically configured, or if I have to re-create every aspect of the config from scratch (would be quiet tedious and error prone).

I do not have a paid support contract (in case that is relevant to your answers).

@chrisjenk netgate has always offers to help people convert their configs from one device to another. Interface names and possibly a few other things will be different so you won’t be able to export the 3100 config and import it directly into the 6100 without tweaking the backup XML. Submit a TAC support ticket and attach your 3100 config and I guarantee netgate will take care of you.

@chrisjenk Netgate will convert configurations for you, as noted. In many cases it is just a simple import, and the GUI will prompt you to (re)assign interfaces if any don't match.

I always forget which direction is problematic if you are coming from/going to a device with a built-in switch (like the 3100) so asking them to look is probably safest and easiest. Especially if one has isolated switch ports with VLANs or whatnot.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Yes, we can do that but going in that direction is usually less of an issue. If you have VLANs configured for the switch ports in the 3100 you can just reassign those interfaces to the discrete NICs in the 6100 when you import it.
