any clue what might be causing this?
only package that wasn't installed by default is openvpn-client-exporttop -SH indicated 6gb of "wired" memory use.
trying to find wired memory with 'ps':

Try running
top -HaSPat the command line. Then sort the output (oto order it) by RES.
That may show you more. There will be duplicates shown by anything using GBs should be obvious.Steve

I believe we have found an issue in the code that pulls ethernet rules. It's particularly apparent where captive portal is running which is probably why you're seeing it more than most.

It's patched in 23.01 if you're able to test that?
It's unlikely to be patched in 22.05 at this point because it would require a point release, the fix is in kernel.

It's patched in 23.01 if you're able to test that?
