Upgrading 2.4.5 to 2.6.0 issues?
-
Hey there i just decided i have some time and can talk people through the downtime, of updating my pfsense from 2.4.5 to 2.6.0 which appears to be latest release on the pfsense dashboard.
I did a very small bit of reading and found that 2.6.0 does not like realtek network cards without some work arounds. That was from a few months ago. Has this issue been fixed?

the realtek card is:

anything else to watch out for with this upgrade?

You have different ways to realise that upgrade, you may considering self what is the way to walk on. In November
perhaps (fingers crossed) we will get a pfSense version 2.7
and there the so called problem is not anymore present.- You may upgrade to 2.4 > 2.5 > 2.6 > 2.7 devel
Developer version is not for production usage level - You upgrade from 2.4.x to 2.5 and wait 1 month longer
Not all are willing in to do so - You could go to 2.6 and install the RealTek drivers later
You can choose between, driver version 1.96.00 or 1.97.00
pfSense CE 2.6 or pfSense+ (Plus) 22.05
Both are based on FreeBSD 12.3
RealTek Driver Version 1.96.04
RealTek Driver 1.97.00Supported RealTek network adapter:
RTL8401-RTL8402
RTL8411-RTL8411B
RTL8125-RTL8125B(S)(G)

- You may upgrade to 2.4 > 2.5 > 2.6 > 2.7 devel

The default Realtek NIC support is no worse in 2.6 than in 2.4.5. If it was working fine for you in 2.4.5 I wouldn't expect problems in 2.6.
The only thing that changed is that the alternative driver was removed from our repo making it slightly more difficult to install. However if you weren't using it then there's no significant difference.Steve
