Suggestions on 2.5G duel pcie card to buy.
-
Hello and thank you in advanced.
Im looking to find a 2.5G or better duel pcie nic card could I get some suggestions or a list of cards that will work with pfsense.
I found a list at.. https://www.freebsd.org/releases/13.0R/hardware/
But it is not listed by speeds that I can see and a little overwhelming. So I'm taking suggestions. I currently have gig service but need to leave room for a little bit of extra speeds down the road soon. I'm also not looking to spend to much like around $100usd or less.

Intel Chipsets 2.5 GBit/s
Intel i225-LM - good driver support
Intel i225-V1 - problems
Intel i225-V2 - problems
Intel i225-V3 - good driver supportIntel i226LM - good driver support in pfSense 2.7
(out-of-the-box)As a workaround if nothing other will be able to realize,
you may set up in front of the pfSense a Multi-GiG Switch and connect the ONT or other devices to the Switch and inside of the pfSense you may install a refurbed 10 Gbit/s network adapter cheap to get hands on eBay and connect it also to that switch. No bottleneck anymore. -

Should be noted this is a development version at the moment

Also should be noted that FreeBSD13 is not part of any planned release for pfSense CE at the moment. 12.3 is the currently supported version. That said - the next release (of both software packages) may support a newer version of FreeBSD but what version that is may newer than 13.x.

So thanks for the info but all that I find with that chipset are single port I need double at least and I might even be able to get 1.25g 4port if I can find one that is supported.

1.25Gbps is not an Ethernet standard as far as I'm aware. I've only ever seen that given as an upstream WAN speed but then it's usually actually delivered over 2.5GbE to the user.
QNAP make 2 and 4 port i225 based NICs. I've never tested eiher myself but there are reports here in the forum.

@stephenw10 Thanks ill look into them cuz I'm still looking for a double or a quad if price is not to much.

@stephenw10 Here is a card I was looking at but I'm not finding much about the Intel 82576 chip here.

That's a 1GbE NIC. 82576 is a very common and now quite old chipset. It would work fine but only at 1G.

@stephenw10 Well after searching and looking at my options with the budge I have I think I'm going to go with this.

I only have 1gig service and none of my machines have more then gig cards in them. So This will work for me. I mean not like I can upgrade in the future. Unless I hear different in the next few hours. -
I would expect that to work fine. It's odd though the way they list it as both i210 and 82576, different devices. And as 1.25Gb which just seems misleading.

@stephenw10 Actually I seen a few that said 1.25g but they all said server controller cards. So we will see. I'll reply here when I get it and get it installed and working.

Skip that card unless you absolutely need 2 Intel ports in an x1 slot. See this thread for my recent experience.
If you have a PCIe slot with four or more lanes just get a card with PCIe x4 interface. The 82576 chipset is well supported, it just wants more bandwidth.

I use the QNAP 2.5gb dual port that is Intel based. It works great. It needs the longer PCI-E slot not the short little guys…..
I have multiple QNAP 2.5gb cards. All are Intel based. I have one dual, 3 singles. My PFSense “router” works like the more popular routers that way. Allows me to connect several 2.5gb clients easily. Yes I know there’s pro’s and con’s to bridging any multiple LAN cards with PFSense but doing so works great for me.
The cards were plug and play for me with 2.6 and now that I’m on 2.7 development version included drivers are not an issue. The tweaks in 2.6 to turn off hardware this, hardware that, not needed with 2.7.0.
