      pfSense users, developers, et alia:

I recently rebooted my pfSense installation only to see the following message (which also occurs when I try to conduct a "13" upgrade on the menu).

Error: It was not possible to identify which pfSense kernel is installed

my pfSense is running as a KVM guest under ProxMox, but I have never seen this occur before. Moreover, as far as I can tell pfSense is running properly otherwise.

One additional note, I am running 2.6 (stable).

        You could use
pfSense Error: It was not possible to identify which pfSense kernel is installed

as this message did occur in the past.

Because you use a KVM, it's probably must faster (a couple of minutes) to check if you have the latest 2.6.0 ISO, make a copy of the current config file. and have the KVM boot from ISO (CD) and re install.

Edit : and where are the logs ??

I appreciate your idea, however, in great part (at first) it seemed like a huge waste of time. Succeeding the restoration of my backup file (which did restore with zero issues) the problem returned and the system remained entirely un-updatable. However, all of a sudden it began to start updating so, I suppose it was a win in the end!

I had to update this message as I was originally intending to file a bug, but it must have been some other issue.

I've should have added an extra step :
When you re install, do a minimal assignment manually : declare a LAN and WAN.
Do not, at this moment, import the backed up config.

Do try the console menu 13.
Or use the GUI 'check for updates' function.
Also : have the mist with available packages shown.
            These should all work.

If not : you have a connectivity (network) error.
            Or a DNS error.

Now, import the backup up config.
If suddenly you receive the message "Error: It was not possible to identify which pfSense kernel is installed" you know the settings in the backup are "not good".

              @gertjan,

Well after performing the restore and just waiting a little while it began to initiate its prior functionality.

Very strange, but okay, it seemed to have worked. Maybe absent any other changes the same thing would have becoming occurring? Who knows.
