I got my eyes on the supermicro xeon d systems for a while now but I am still wondering which one will get me as close as possible to 10 Gbits single stream.
However in the last few month the electricity costs got quite high were I live so power consumption is a factor as well now.

My aim is to max out 10 Gbit for file transfers using smb and nfs between different vlans.

I took a look at D-15XX and the new D-17XX systems. As far as I now the D-15XX systems can get between 3-5 Gbits single stream througput (depending on the version)? I haven't found much information about the D-17XX systems. Wether if they perform well with pfsense nor what single stream throughput they can deliver.

As far as I know the "nt" versions are made for "networking purposes"?
A system I favoured is the following one:
      https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/system/iot/1u/sys-510d-8c-fn6p
The only downside is the TDP of 67W and I can't find any European based seller.

Is there anyone who has some experience with the D-17XX systems regarding pfsense and performance?

I also wonder if certain network cards with features like tcp offloading would increase the single stream throughput?

      Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you need to buy a level 2 or 3 switch.

For pfsense performance I would start by using the Netgate performance data as a benchmark. https://www.netgate.com/appliances

For 10Gbit you may need to look at TNSR

If your only goal is the fastest single connection throughput I would look at something with fewer but faster cores.

@n1k You need D-21XX CPU's to get there....
