How to get WAN failover working on soft down (Gateway available but one hop further is not)?

Hi community,
I have a fresh install of pfSense and migrated my configuration from Sophos UTM 9. All works just fine, I thought. Then I tested the failover and my enthusiasm came to an end. I don't seem to find a solution for my case on my own and I hope you guys can help me.
The problem is this: All three WAN interfaces I have use a router as Gateway before traffic goes to the dark night of public data network called the internet. So there's a transfer network. Problem is, if ISP goes down, the gateway (ISP router) is still available, so pfSense does not detect a failing connection here. The Sophos UTM 9 detected that on the fly and my assumption was that pfSense would be capable of this out of the box either. But turned out I was wrong.
So, here're the juicy screenshots of my Gateway status pages:
So, is there any way to have an option like ping host per interface rather than only detect the link status itself?
Thank you in advance!

@sarahs you can change the monitor IP to something upstream of the connection.

Thank you!
