Pfsense still asigning IP after static assigned
-
Greetings,
I have configured dhcp to assign based on static and I add my client manually on server via using mac of their host.
For testing I have changed one of added MAC on dhcp list i.e
From 01:01:01:01:01:01 and IP remain same 172.16.159.20 TO 01:01:01:01:01:00 and IP remain same 172.16.159.20 but still getting ip address 172.16.159.20 with orignal mac in log
yet that client still getting IP address from dhcp server ? is there any thing I did wrong?
ARP log shows this entry LAN 172.16.159.20 01:01:01:01:01:01 Laptop_LAN Expires in 563 seconds ethernet
Regards

You also changed the MAC of the client : the MAC should be changed on the client (not pfSense).
Only then you change the DHCP MAC Lease on pfSense : set the new client's MAC in the lease. -
Thank you for your prompt response, I didnt intend to change mac of client for a testing reason what if I change any value of registred MAC on pfsense it should not be getting IP right but it does get IP that's what make me curious why did pfsend assign IP ?

re check your knowledge about DHCP.
The DHCP client asks a DHCP server for an IP. It transmits it's (hardware) NIC build in MAC address.
The MAC is the ID of the client, that's how the DHCP server knows who is who.If the MAC you've entered in the DHCP server matches the MAC of the client, then the DHCP server knows what IP to propose. If the DHCP server doesn't have the MAC already listed, it will serve a random IP out of the pool.
I advise you to isolate yourself with the keyword "DHCP" and the web site 'youtube'.
You'll need one hour. -
I agreed as I sent screen shot of I have define pool to auto leased only 172.16.159.252 to 172.16.159.253 ip and then reset based on mac I entered in dhcp list then it will assign that ip to entered mac .
I noticed that when I made changes into orignal entry intensionally then dhcp not suppose to assigned same old IP address unless and until it is listed. Although I have flushed arp recycled leased.
