Hi folks, I'm trying to figure out how to replace my existing PFSense hardware, as it is pretty old now. I'm currently running on a HP Gen7 Microserver. I'd like to fulfill as many of the following requirements with the replacement:

      • Quiet - location is my living room. Current device is audible only when nothing else (TV/music etc) is happening
      • Rack mountable - I have a small 19" rack with switch some other bits, it will be neater if I can fit it into this
      • ideally x4 >1GB ports for future proofing; I could make it work with just LAN/WAN but extra is better as I have a bunch of home lab stuff and the flexibility will be valuable
      • Must be available in the UK
      • At least as powerful as the existing device, preferably an upgrade (I am running Suricata on several VLAN interfaces)
      • Budget: currently the only device I have found meeting these requirements is the following: https://www.mini-itx.com/~JBC390V-345; this is not completely out of the question but it is stretching my limits and I don't strictly need a fanless industrial build, nor do I need 10 LAN ports. The perfect option would be 4x 2.5GB LAN (or even some 10GB if I'm lucky - my switch has 2x 10GB ports) and a bit cheaper than this, I was hoping for £300-£350

Can anyone point me to something that will get at all close to the above please?

What exactly do you have in that currently?

Does it have to be new? Tough to meet all those in a new device.

Not quite what you want, but 3 of these work for me. PVE+pfSense. For me, ideal.

@stephenw10 I believe the CPU is a 1.7GHz dual core Athlon; I have 8GB DDR3 RAM in it. I don't think that's too difficult to match, it's pretty old, modern CPUs would most likely beat it even if their clock speed is quite a bit lower. New is not essential, but NUCs like the one @Viper_Rus linked are pretty affordable so I think it's achievable.

@Viper_Rus - yes that looks pretty good, I was looking at a similar one, I just wish I could get it as a rackmount
