Long time PFsense user. Great utility!

I had a Verizon UML modem as a fall back when the cable co's internet went out. This worked well until I left VZW for T-Mobile. The UML modem won't work on Tmo's network so they are offering me a "Tmobile 5G hotspot"

They say there's no brand name, that it's just that. Here's a link to it.
      https://www.t-mobile.com/hotspot-iot-connected-devices/t-mobile-5g-hotspot

      Will this work with pfsense?

      TIA

@monstermaxx said in Tmobile 5G hotspot and PFsense:

        Tmobile 5G

It should work if it has an Ethernet port; however, I would go with the 5G home Internet...for sure that has an Ethernet port, despite been three times the cost $25/month, and the T-mobile loans the device (5G home Internet modem) freely.

Look like it's USB only. It claims to support tethering though so.... maybe.

@stephenw10 Better to get a Wireless->Ethernet bridge device that connects to the hotspot.

Because TMO's implementation is garbage (personal opinion based on an attempted deployment) Host-based VPN links in IPsec won't work. Didn't try wireguard. OVPN should work but we werent set up for it.

@monstermaxx Hi, I tried to connect the TP-Link M7350 to pfsense router on PC hardware and I was successful. The device connected via USB to PC was recognized as ue0 interface in pfsense, at once. The TP-Link device hardware version is v.7 of M3750.pfsense1.png pfsense2.png
I have static IP, but the DHCP also work's.

I finally (that's another story) got the device from T-Mobile. It's not got any brand name on it whatsoever. Just a little battery powered box with a LCD.

PFsense does seem to recognize it under the same heading that the old one was working under, but this is not working when I disconnect the main line.

Tethering is enabled on the device.

I'm a long ways from being an expert on PFsense, though I have been using it for quite some time now.

When you connect it what new lines do you see in the system log?

It's probably that. But if you boot without it connected and then connect it after boot you will see new log lines that are created by that device. At the console you will also see some output.

But it looks like it's probably being recognised correctly as a USB NIC.
                      What's not happening?

If I pull the plug on the cable modem, it doesn't failover to the usb Tmo hotspot.

To see your hardware connected to USB you can ssh (ssh root@<your router IP>) in to freeBSD OS and press 8 on keyboard to run FreeBSD Shell. In shell run command "usbconfig" to display all your devices connected to USB connectors. My USB WAN device is represented like this:
                          ugen0.2: <TP-Link Corporation Limited. M7350> at usbus0, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=ON (500mA)
Next step you have to see in WEB GUI under interfaces --> Assigments if your T-mobile is displayed in Availabe network ports. Than you have to select your T-mobile modem and press +Add. Rename your new interface as you wish. Continue with setting up Multi WAN connection.
Do you configured multi WAN interfaces with failover function?
Maybe this link is for some help: https://www.wundertech.net/how-to-set-up-dual-multi-wan-in-pfsense/
                          I think this is better:

I used this guide and it worked. I'm up now. Thanks for all the help.

Looks like Tmo's USB modem does in fact work with PFsense!

My only concern would be am I going to hit bandwith overcharges?

Should I set the tmo interface to be tier 2 so it's on the cable modem unless there's a fail?

@monstermaxx I don't know how the T-mobile charge you, but in our country the Telemach charge as only for fixed monthly fee. For this fee I receive unlimited internet access and I measured speeds with Speedtest on Raspberry Pi (tiny computer) and the download is limited to 100Mbit and upload is limited to ~40Mbit. With tier you can set up priority to an interface.

                                Look at this link:
                                https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-configure-dual-wan-load-balance-failover-pfsense-router/

It is even better than other one.

                                  Yes, I would do that.

Also be aware that some types of connections can maintain their states indefinitely so will not fail back to the cable modem if they get pushed to the cell link.
