qotom i3 Q800GE random crashes
-
I have a qotom J1900 which runs rock solid. I also have a qotom Q800GE i3 that I have been trying to duplicate the j1900 setup on, but it keeps having random crashes.
I have run memtest86+ with no problems. I initially installed pfsense 2.6 had crashes upgraded to 22.01 had crashes. Did fresh install with 22.05 and still getting random crashes.

Do you have a crash report? Kernel panic?
Does it run stable with something else booted?

@stephenw10 i updated the bios and made sure Turbo was turned off. The unit was operating at a lot lower temprature, and from the console the unit did not reboot overnight. I also noticed there was a menu option for ntopng, so i installed the package and then removed it which cleaned up the menu residue.
However, this morning, i am unable to get an ip address from the lan side. I can see from the console via serial, that the wan and vpn are connected. from the dhcp log, i can see the pc is discovered and an ip is offered, but no ip is obtained. if i manually set the client ip to what was being offered, can't ping in either direction.
tried disablng the firewall from the console but didn't help
in answer to your second question, it was running fine with memtest86+ for 2 days
Edit: after a couple of power offs it came back. But is now running at 37deg on all cores. was never that low before. so fingers crossed, it starts to show enough reliability that i can get to the point of swapping out.

@stephenw10 hi steve,
so the bios upgrade and specifically disabling the Turbo parameter (not withstanding the other settings were set to max speed without turbo), seems to have a) reduced the temperature by almost 10deg and solved the stability issue. The problem that I am now experiencing, if I reboot the client I am using for admin, it can't get a DHCP address. I have to change the port on a different net to be able to able to get a DHCP address and network established, but pfsense is running fine. I don't have this issue on the J1900.
any ideas?

I have a older Qotom Q330G4, I took it apart when it was new and replaced the thermal paste, factory paste was cr*p...
Full load temps came down 15-20c after the thermal paste replacement. -
Yup that. If it won't run stable at the normal clock speeds check the cooling. It's not uncommon to find the thermal paste is..... sub-optimal!

You misunderstood, it seems to work fine at normal speed. It appears; there are a number of settings related to Turbo mode (overclocking), the settings that limit to maximum speed without overclocking are insufficient. There is a setting "Turbo" and setting that to off made the biggest difference. I wouldn't use a passive cooled device in turbo anyway. In fact, i don't use overclocking for anything as I don't use my systems as gaming machines. reliability is more important.

Yes, that's exactly what I understood you to mean. I would be checking the thermal paste.

I changed the heatsink compound and swapped the unit into production.
It is sitting at 29-31deg now in my basement and is stable.I have left "Turbo" off, as I don't think it is needed or helpful on a passive cooled system.
FYI - anyone with the same unit. the igb7 and igb6 are reversed,
so it is igb0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 6
