This indicates that pfSense cannot communicate with the WAN gateway.

I assume, you did reboot already.
So how is your WAN configured? Which kind of connection is it?

Is the gateway within the WAN subnet?

The error above indicates an layer 2 failure on WAN.
Presumably the gateway doesn't response to ARP requests.

You can sniff the ARP traffic with packet capture to get sure.

reinstall from a 2.5.2 ISO, then restoring a config from 2.5.2 or earlier (your 2.6 config is not compatible)
With the exception of using ZFS there is no rolling back functionality.

Nothing in 2.6 should do that. You should check the ARP table and run a pcap on WAN to see what's actually happening.

You might be seeing some secondary issue like the hardware support in 2.6 sees additional NICs and your WAN is no longer the NIC you expect it to be.

                        Problem resolved : https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/12834

You can install the System Patches package and then apply this patch directly from the built-in Recommended Patches list.

The patch is available in the System Patches package version 2.0_4 or later, no need to create a manual entry.
