Upgrade to FreeBSD 14?
-
So is a upgrade to FreeBSD 14 possible?
pkg upgrade?
Thanks
-
@deanfourie FreeBSD 14 upgrade occurs as part of the 23.01 upgrade process, or by installing the snapshots for 2.7CE.
older pfSense releases than 23.01 and 2.7CE will not work with FreeBSD14.

Im on 22.05 and BSD 12
22.05-RELEASE (amd64) built on Wed Jun 22 18:56:13 UTC 2022 FreeBSD 12.3-STABLE

You can't upgrade to FreeBSD 14 separately. When you upgrade to 23.01 you will see FreeBSD reported there because it is built in FreeBSD main.

What is the difference between pfSense + 23.01 and the 2.7.0 snapshots, other then them being development builds obviously.
I guess what im getting at is why the different version convention,
23.01 >> 2.7.0 ?
Thanks

When we moved from factory to Plus we changes the naming convention to year.month just to make distinction clearer.

to year.month
Just to be that guy ;) can we still call it "month" or should it be called year.release# since have the last few releases actually lined up with the month of their release... Just saying - hehehe
-
Target month maybe?
-
@stephenw10 better.. heheh I hope everyone knows I am joking.. And I am all for don't release it until its ready that is for sure.. But being that guy this morning, lets just say the track record as of yet hasn't been good for the "month" nomenclature..
Since the first plus release 21.02 which was in feb they have all been the actual following month..
21.05 6-2
22.01 2-14
22.05 6-26
23.01 2-15I personally could care less what the version numbers are to be honest or what you base them off of.. And I get how changing the version number if something comes up that delays release - which to be honest is quite expected when you want to release a good product, etc. can be a pita.. Maybe calling it targetmonth would be a good thing to call it in the nomenclature for the versioning info ;)
-
@johnpoz so which is the newest?
-
@deanfourie the current + release is 23.01, latest and greatest fresh off the press..
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/releases/versions.html
edit: The numbers are easy enough to tell which is older and which is newer, etc. And the the dates have been close enough, etc. I guess just feeling a bit rambunctious this morning and thought I would poke the bear a bit after Steve's comment to year.month is all hehehe
A idea for thought - how about adding codewords or nicknames to the releases.. Lots of distros do it.. Ubuntu might be the best known for them.
Bionic Beaver, Focal Fassa, Jammy Jellyfish
And then you have Debian with Jessie, Stretch, Buster, Bullseye, etc. Many of the linux distro's do it - OpenBSD has their song and artwork that goes along with the release.
Pfsense should come up something catchy to go along with their releases.. Like a cool codeword, or something - maybe we could tie them with Grateful Dead songs? Or names of Porn Stars or something - hehe, Greek Gods maybe..

Interpretive dance
Technically a 2.7 snapshot is newer because it has things that have been added/fixed since 23.01 was branched. There is also a similar 23.05 snapshot but that's not currently public because we will likely break everything in the coming weeks adding new stuff there.
-
@stephenw10 yeah need to come up with something fun.. The dance idea only works if someone on the netgate staff has to post a vid of them doing it ;) hehehe
Oh I thought he was asking about + versions, which one is latest..
And while banging your head could be considered an interpretive dance - I think that would only work once ;)
I can see TAC guys doing this every release day ;)
edit: this comic just got posted on a real work meeting I am on.. Ties in nicely hehehe

@stephenw10 so is there a tiktok should be following to look for these dances hehehe
@deanfourie to your update to 14 possible question - yes it is possible, just upgrade to 23.01.. 2.7 is also 14, so you could run one of the snaps of that.
