Hello, I'm running asmall server with 8 cores and 8 threads. I was wondering How many cores do I need to make pfsense run? I have 2 other virtual machines as well one windows 10 with 4 cores and one linux with 2 cores. I have enough memory of 32GB.

Edit: i'm seeing online all different specs to run pfsense. However Sense it is only for the two VM's I don't know.

@josephchrzempiec it depends on bandwidth and any packages used. Start with two and see…?

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

It all depends on the packets you will be installing and using.

I would install it and try out, removing the VM is faster done
for you, then discussing here 20 hours for nothing. You will
be finding out it very fast if it is not working like a charm.

@steveits Thank you I have set it to 2cores and 4GB of memory. I just use it to remote in and test my applications that's all. Nothing network intensive.

@dobby_ True. I have 2 cores and 4GB of memory. I don't do network intensive things. I just remote in and run a few of my testing applications that's all. For windows and linux.

Check my backup box in my sig. Has worked great for several years but just replaced by actual hardware. I use 2 cores in the VM, just figuring if one's busy, there's always the other. With only one, the GUI is way too slow. Running on a 2008 vintage quad core (my main server/workstation, lol). My new FW is an i7 (lol x2).
