Pfsense connect to a WiFi AP

  • hi there

finally managed to get some spare time to play around with pfSense…
since years I've been using IPCop as my firewall/router but than i had an opportunity to connect a neighbour house with my LAN so i decided to try a shot with pfsense...
anyway, my lan is based like this Internet<-->IPCop<-->LAN<-->WiFi AP
the other house is intended to be WLAN card<-->pfSense<-->LAN
in which case the WiFi AP and the WLAN card from pfSense are going to be connected via wifi (obviously :) the link visibility is clear between them...
the card i use is Canyon WF511 and the card is detected normally on pfSense (1.2.3 RC1), the WiFi AP is Siemens SE555 (IP static 192.168.1.50) and IPcop is 192.168.1.1
the problem is i don't get it how should i connect pfsense via WiFi with the AP?
i managed to install the wlan card as OPT1 interface but i think i have only the options to setup an AP with pfsense, not to connect to one...
do i have to do stuff like this http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/network-wireless.html or?
can anyone tell me a hint or a link where is explained this? tried to google the forum but no results... maybe this would help me if it would be online http://doc.pfsense.org/smiller/Add_WiFi_Interface.htm :(

anyway, how do I connect pfsense to a WiFi AP using an wlan card?  ??? ??? ???

    thx

  • I've been struggling with a very similar setup, but i dont think the pfsense is what is at fault.

    house 1:

    Internet <> Pfsense <> Lan
<> OPT 1 connected to wifi access point, set to automatically connect to the WIFI network below..

    house 2:

    Internet <> Pfsense <> Lan
<> OPT 1 connected to lan side of a wireless router.

The idea is house 1 uses house 1's internet, vice versa for house 2, but with static routes pcs in each house use the wifi link to talk to each other.

NB. For the wireless settings, i have tried every combination i can think of of simply running a wlan with a client connected, WDS, Bridges, and so on.

When connected by  wireless, it work intermittently in 1 direction
When i plug a wire between the 2 OPT1 interfaces, everythign works like a charm.

My last resort to get this all running, is going to be getting 2 wireless access points (NOT router or whatever), of the same make and model.

So, no help on how to get your card loging onto a network, but i can tell you that if you get a really basic access point, set it into client mode and set it to dhcp (im using s netgear WG 602 v3) and connect it to your wan interface, this will make the pfsense log onto your existing network using dhcp.
To make this work, you must a) make sure the pfsense LAN has a different ip range (ie not 192.168.1.x), and b) in your WAN settings on the pfsense ensure that "Block private networks" is NOT ticked.

    Good luck :)

  • urm… still don't get it...  ??? ???

so far i have WiFi AP that gives dhcp for every wifi equipment that logs on to it, but i dont get it, i should plug that wifi AP to my pfsense WAN interface? how will i connect than to the other house if theres another AP on that house? r u talking about AP<->AP<->pfsense connection or wot? i misunderstood smthg here riight?  ??? ;D
basically, there's no chance to connect from pfsense using a wifi card to an AP?
btw, in my pfsense under Wireless i can see the networks around and the AP i should connect to, but i dont know how..

    thx in advance…

  • hehehe

    the problem got solved…
the problem was.. in the cable between the antenna and WiFi NIC in pfsense.....  ;D
    so, everything runs now ;)
