Upgraded CE to 23.01 on physical, but how now to go virtual?
-
I think I'm caught in a Catch 22.
Preamble: I'm a home/lab user running Sense running on a BYOD physical server. Following Netgate's recommendation of converting to Plus's for the technical benefits while staying at the free service tier, I upgraded the system from CE 2.6 to 23.01. Worked flawlessly.
Quandary: I'd like to experiment with virtualizing my pfSense+ installation under a hypervisor. The intent: wipe the server, install the hypervisor then reinstall pfSense+ with a config restore. But there aren't pfSense+ ISOs for download (that I can find) other than through the TAC, which as a home/lab user I cannot access.
Question: Thoughts on options? Certainly, I have "the hammer" approach of reinstalling CE in a guest environment, purchasing another (free) upgrade license, etc. But are there cleaner/smarter approaches?
P.S. Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question.

Home & Lab version must installed as CE version
first, then you can upgrade to xyz.2.6 CE (zfs) > Plus 22.05 (zfs) > Plus 23.01 (zfs)
2.7 CE (zfs) > Plus 23.01 (zfs)There is no iso image for 22.05/23.01 to download.

Thanks, appreciate the quick response. I guess it's the hammer approach, then.
I'm sure there are good reasons unknown to me, but it seems odd to encourage the migration to Plus and then hamstring the lab users who by the nature of their environments are likely to need reinstallations.

You may be able to,
- make a backup of the VM
- Work with shadow copies
- Or plain copy over the VM
If something occurs you will be fast back in the lab.
