How do I go about installing rsync on pfSense?
Alternatively, what is the recommended way of creating a mirrored image of a pfSense installation on an external disk?

Aren't you happy with that one coming already with pfSense?

There is not really a need to backup the whole image. Just backup the configuration. You can use the automatic backup (ServicesAuto Configuration Backup) into the cloud or script it yourself to store the config locally or even manually (Diagnostics > Backup & Restore > Config History).
In case you installation is broken, you can quickly reinstall pfSense and import the config. -

I don't see an rsync in my installation of pfSense
2.6.0-RELEASE (amd64). -
@balanga
Nothing if you simply type "rsync -V" in the console?
So possibly one of packages brought it to my pfSense.Mine is installed in /usr/local/bin/.
