6100 fried by lightning
-
Hi, all!
I'm new to the forums but have had a "hand me down" SG6100 in my possession for the last 6 months. Unfortunately, there was a direct lighting strike 4 houses down from my residence which took out everyone's cable modem along the line that feeds me and several others. That occurred last Friday evening when we had some severe weather move through. Upon me returning home, I find out my modem is totally cooked (not even powered up) and the 6100 was showing solid orange on the leftmost LED status lights. On the rear, the status lights on WAN1 are lit up and they stay lit even when removing an ethernet cable. I surmise the 6100 is toast. Connecting via usb using Putty is a no-go as well
Resetting and power cycling didn't help any, along with trying to reset the appliance.
I bought a Protectli to replace it with until I get around to getting the 6100 fixed. So my question is, how much is the replacement motherboard for the 6100? Or should I just e-cycle it? If it's too close to a new one pricewise, I'll just e-cycle it.
TIA -
@captainron There are no replacement boards for the 6100 - so you will be looking at list price.

Back again with new information...
I disassembled the unit in order to survey any damage and couldn't find any thus far. It looks like it [the lightning] got the controller that manages the 4 LAN ports. A warning message that I posted from the bootup messages (dmesg) says the following:
Warning: Configuration references interfaces that do not exist: igc0 igc1 igc2 igc3Network interface mismatch -- Running interface assignment option.
Valid interfaces are:
ix0 90:ec:77:21:50:f3 (down) Intel(R) X553 N (SFP+)
ix1 90:ec:77:21:50:f4 (down) Intel(R) X553 N (SFP+)
ix2 90:ec:77:21:50:f2 (down) Intel(R) X553 L (1GbE) 3 lights on: green, amber, green; port doesn't work
ix3 90:ec:77:21:50:f1 (down) Intel(R) X553 L (1GbE)Here is the rub though...
3 of the 4 LAN ports show "activity" when I plug those into the switch. But the OS cannot configure those ports for some reason (" Configuration ... do not exist: igc0-3").LAN1: dead (with a green light constant on)
LAN2: activity
LAN3: activity
LAN4: activityAlong with a few hosed ethernet ports, I also surmise the smb bus got partially nuked as well.

@captainron This is too late to help this time, but many UPSs and some surge protectors have Ethernet ports so one can run the Ethernet cable through the UPS for surge protection. Some also have cable connectors. I've seen TVs, analog modems, NICs, etc., get burned out at various friends and clients.

@steveits Cheaper than a UPS that protects against CAT5/6 (aka RJ45) is the DiTEK MRJ. Ground it properly and it will protect your gear. I bought hundreds of these devices in my previous life of installing wifi and security devices in the field on questionable cabling. Never lost one to a strike -- replaced many MRJs but never a camera or AP because of a voltage jump to twister pair. Anything that goes outside, comes inside, should have one on it.

Well at least it may not be completely unusable though. It clearly still booting and it sees the 4 ix NICs that are in the SoC. If the PHYs those use are good you should still have 4 NICs available.

I bought a few inline coax surge protectors and they should be in soon. The RJ45 connectors (the ones beside the sfp connectors are both dead; nothing passes through them. I think the only connectors that work would be the sfp ones. Anyway, I don't want to throw any more money at it. I have a protectli vault and it's doing fine. Unless I can desolder and remove the PHY's or whatever, I'm SOL.

If the SOC isn't seeing the RJ45 of the combos they likely aren't seeing the SFPs either - they use the same controller.

@rcoleman-netgate
I do thank you for helping me out but it's heading to the e-cycler. I've had enough with it. -
@captainron My previous offer still stands.
