I started the upgrade, but it seems to be stuck. When i tried to open another session, it said there was already one running in the background. evidently, the system refreshed but did not reboot.

after I rebooted, i still see 23.01 release

      e37a64c1-eedf-41ed-baeb-ad10a0a1a0bf-image.png

I also get the below error if trying manually.

      pkg-static update -f
      Updating pfSense-core repository catalogue...
      Fetching meta.conf: 100% 163 B 0.2kB/s 00:01

      And this error

I ignored and continued for the "pkg-static update -f" and then run pkg-static upgrade. Hope I haven't stuffed it. (well, it is clear, i have completely stuffed my install)

@gwaitsi this is brillant my box boots but nothing works. can't get an IP address and can't recover. now i discover there is no recovery image for 23.05 only 2.6... nice one.

I managed to bring up a cold standby with reduced functionality.
I need to do a clean install of 23.05 with a backup restore.

Where do we get the image from?
Can we revert back to community 2.6 version or at least 2.7 dev version.
I want to dump pfsense plus as I don't want to get caught out like this again.

Below is the response from opening a TAC Lite ticket.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO PLUS - Stick with CE unless you want to wind up stuffed !!!

THIS SHOULD BE FULLY DISCLOSED BEFORE ENCOURAGING PEOPE TO UPGRADE.

"The process to migrate CE to Plus requires starting with at least pfSense CE 2.6-RELEASE. There is no pfSense+ software install image for third-party hardware at this time. More details on the process can be found at: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/migrate-to-plus.html"

Take a deep breath... the sky is actually not falling and your firewall could have been back up in less than 1 hr.

There should've been no expectation of a 23.05 recovery image. Netgate has never indicated one would be available for non-Netgate hardware. If you thought there would be one then you should have had it downloaded BEFORE you upgraded. Not after.

Restore to 2.6 upgrade back to latest plus stable and restore the backup you should've made BEFORE your 1st upgrade attempt.

There is no award for being 1st in upgrading the thing that protects your network. Well none that would put you in a good light anyway....

See above. Take a breath and always take a backup before upgrading. TAC images are for Netgate hardware, they have never claimed otherwise, despite some public users post seemingly indicating otherwise.

@gwaitsi If you have a 23.01 backup file you can restore it directly to 2.7: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/restore.html#backup-compatibility

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@steveits but 2.7 is development. can we then switch to 23.05?

@gwaitsi I don't think so right away but eventually, yes. One can't upgrade directly from 2.6 to 23.01 because the OS and PHP both changed major versions. So their upgrade path was to the closest Plus version to 2.6, then upgrade Plus versions to current.

You had asked to "revert back to community 2.6 version or at least 2.7 dev version."

@gwaitsi This is not an issue with pfsense. Yes, the GUI update does not seem to be working. However, updating from console worked fine for me. Your situation seems to be user error and is not a reason to abandon great software. The pkg upgrade command was the big mistake. You upgraded your packages before updating pfsense. That's a no no and pfsense docs will tell you that as well. Unforuntately, you will have to reinstall and recover from a backup.
Next time you're in this situation, refer to the pfsense docs. That's where I found the correct command to perform the update to 23.05. The command "pfsense-upgrade" would have got you updated to 23.05 no problem.

@raffi_ i have re-installed both CE 6 and 7 to no avail. they will only shows packages within their own branch. trying to go to any other branch i.e. CE 6 to plus or 7 brings unable to check for updates

pkg-static upgrade gives me "could not load client certificate /etc/ssl/pfsense-repo-custom.cert

@gwaitsi so i can switch between 6.0 and 7.0 dev but, it seems because I don't need to register as my device from plus is recognized, something is missing.

i already copied over the files from another 23.01 box
                        pfSense-repo-custom.cert
                        pfSense-repo-custom.key

                        but I get the errors
repository pfsense-core has a wrong packagesite need to recreate database
                        pkg-static meta.txz bad request
                        pkg-static packagesite.pkg bad request
                        pkg-static packagesite.txz bad request
                        unable to update repository pfsense-core
unabe to compare version of pfsense-repo

                        so much for 1hr restoring

now i also discover, even if i wanted to restore the auto backup, 2.6 is saying it can't decrypt it. i hope that is because it was created with 23.01.

It is clear that my proposal is somewhat late, but why not just use boot environments next time? Especially when the system boots up, there shouldn't be any problem rolling back to any previous version, well almost.

Not true, just did two earlier; however, one had a hiccup but sort itself out.

@gwaitsi I had the same as your first screen shot, then, I re-registered, still got the same, rebooted, tried again and all was good, upgraded easy-peasy.

@nollipfsense what do you mean re-registered. It doesn't allow me to enter anything in the box, when the bar at the top says my device is already recognized

@gwaitsi Re-registered means going to Netgate and register again (free), check email for new key, copy key and paste in registration box on pfSense. Then, I tried upgrading, got upgrade failure, rebooted, tried again and all was good.
