So this is a weird one for me, please bear with me while I relate the saga:

I finally have Xfinity/Comcast ISP (Boo! Hiss!) out of my life, and a nice 1Gb/1Gb fiber connection, yay!

Unfortunately my fiber ISP does not yet support IPv6, but "It's on the roadmap for this year." Sigh.

SO I've implemented a Hurricane Electric free IPv6oIPv4 tunnel. Thank you HE! Tunnel Broker, yay!

Following the excellent instructions and documentation at https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/recipes/ipv6-tunnel-broker.html all seems copectic and seems to be working and tests out with minuscule lag, "yay!

    BUT

"Every so often" which can be <24hrs or several days, there doesn't seem to be a pattern or track events like the IPv4 connection going down, there is a problem:

The IPv6 connection stops working, but does not go down or error out. The symptoms are:

    • No IPv6 connectivity from pfsense itself or any of the LAN side systems.
    • The connection and the gateway show as up with no packet loss. (really weird)
    • Sometimes the LAN side systems will lose their IPv6 address, route, or both.
    • gif0 is showing a constant traffic flow in and out of <1Mb/s
    • Sometimes the radvd stops, restarting does not fix
    • Taking the IPv6 gif0 interface down and up does not fix
    • Restarting the gateway does not fix
    • The only thing that does seem to fix it is a reroot or reboot, which is a bit drastic

So, any thoughts on what I should be looking in the logs and what configuration information would help?

Yes, this is 23.05 and the same thing happened under the previous release too.

Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions?

@daplumber I have been running 23.05 with tunnel broker without any interruptions since May 24th. The first place I would look would be in the logs for the interface description you setup "gif interface". gateways.log has helped me debug stability problems with gif interfaces in the past.

@ansel That was the weird part there was nothing in the logs and the interface showed up.

I say "was" as it hasn't happened in the last week. Sigh.
